Out of all of the weddings I coordinated last year, not one couple chose to do The Honeymoon Dance, or The Money Dance.
Personally, I've never been a fan of it. When a bride asks, I tell her my opinion but I never judge or turn it down. I know that it is a part of the Hispanic wedding tradition, and I love tradition so of course I completely respect that.
But it is one tradition that I never even considered at my own wedding, and here is why:
Your guests have spent a lot of money getting to your wedding. Engagement gifts, bridal shower gifts, possibly the bachelor or bachelorette parties, a dress, heels, transportation, at least a night stay at a hotel, drinks, babysitting for the kids, travel if they are from out of town, wedding gifts, and the list goes on.
If you haven't seen it already, here is an overview of how much it costs for a guest to attend your wedding, on average. And so, my point is proven in my eyes.
Yes, it sounds like a dream having all of that cash to spend on the honeymoon (or to put right into a savings account), but we just felt bad almost requiring our guests to spend even more money on us when they got there!
A Great Alternative
If you want to stick to the tradition of The Honeymoon Dance but feel bad about it, a great alternative (that I wish I had thought of before our wedding) is a Charity Dance. Whether there is a charity that has impacted your family or a close friend, or just a charity that is near and dear to your hearts, the Charity Dance is used to raise money for a great cause and to have fun and keep tradition while doing it!
