The Do's and the Don'ts of Flower Girls and Ring Bearers

The little ones are always my favorite to send off down the aisle, because they're just too darn cute! While some are energetic about their title, others tend to shy away once they see hundreds of eyes staring straight at them, as they call for an escort down the aisle (mommy or daddy or, most often, me.)

So while there really aren't any "real rules" when it comes to flower girls and ring bearers, as the pickings are quite slim for most couples, I've got some do's and don'ts to share with all of you:

DON'T give the ring bearer the real rings. That is the job of the Best Man to hold them safely. In a 5 year old's eyes, a pillow is a toy. And toy's get thrown. So do yourself a favor and save that job for someone else.

DO give the ring bearer fake rings. After months or even years of excitement, getting to carry the rings down the aisle is something he is looking forward to. I mean, you all told him that it's his job so what else would he expect? You could guess how upset he will be when he sees nothing at all tied to that pillow. So let's keep him happy too!

DON'T choose an outfit that will be itchy and uncomfortable. Remember, they have to wear this outfit for many hours!

DO choose an outfit that they will like. Because there is nothing worse than a crying child refusing to put on their party dress.

DON'T have the ring bearer or flower girl stand up front during the ceremony. It just doesn't work.

DO have their parents sitting in the first or second row so they can sit down once they get to the front of the aisle.

DON'T choose a baby who is just learning to walk...unless they'll be pushed or pulled on a carriage.

DO choose kids who are old enough to make it to the end of the aisle.

DON'T choose kids who are very shy. Because as soon as they seen hundreds of face staring their way, they're going to run for the hills.

DO choose kids who are excited, not shy and who will smile for some adorable shots, all day long.

DON'T time up your music perfectly for them. They will always take at least twice as long as expected.

DO leave plenty of song for them so the DJ can either fade out and back into the bridal recessional or plan to repeat the song.

And if all else fails, choose none at all. They’re cute, but they’ll definitely steal the show :)
