Does that date ring a bell to you? You guessed it. It was the day Kate Middleton married Prince William. If you were like me, you woke up at 5 a.m. (or 2 a.m. for all you West Coasters), turned on the TV, and watched for hours as a beautiful young lady captivated the hearts of millions as she was creating her own Cinderella story right before our eyes.

Everything about that day was exquisite – from the pageantry, to her very handsome prince, to her hair and makeup and her dress. Oh, that dress! It’s the stuff dreams are made of, and to this day, women everywhere seems to channel their inner Kate when shopping for their own dress. Just look at trends she, and her sister, Pippa, started in the bridal gown industry.

But that day was even more memorable for me. It was the day I got to choose my very own bridal gown. Yes, that was intentional. I took a day off from work because A.) I wanted to watch the wedding; and B.) I thought how cool would it be to buy my dress on the same day of the royal wedding. I couldn’t have, nor wouldn’t have, wanted it any other way. In the year-and-a-half of wedding planning, that was the best day (except our wedding day, of course)!

For those of you who don’t know, I have a degree in fashion design because my dream was to be a bridal gown designer. From as early as I can remember, probably around age 10, I was buying and studying bridal magazines. Not because I was envisioning what my wedding would be like (that really never entered my mind until I said “yes”), but because I was enthralled (and still am) by the beauty and artistry of the dress. I even interned at a couture bridal salon in London my junior year of college. As fate, and clumsy hands at the sewing machine, would have it, I did not end up designing dresses. But, those who know me well know that I live vicariously through the TV every Friday night as I watch hours of bridal shows. In my mind, there’s no better way to end the week.

The day you shop and choose your wedding dress will hopefully be full of indescribable feelings. For some, it’ll fee like a ton of bricks has been lifted off your back as you cross a MAJOR check off your list. For others, like it was for me, it’ll be euphoric! Unless you get an invitation to walk the Academy Awards red carpet, you most likely will never, EVER, have the opportunity to try on or wear dresses made of silky satin, beautiful crystals, delicate lace, full skirts, couture hand appliques, etc. It’s the ultimate form of dress-up, and you are the star.

Jenn put together a great list back in December on when you know you’ve chosen “The Dress.” I also wanted to give you a short list of what to expect on your dress shopping day. While it’s fun to play dress-up, your appointment is only for a short amount of time; it averages about two hours. Can you make another appointment? Sure. But the more you are prepared, the better – and more fun – your first appointment will be.

Next month, I will be revealing my top-10 list of what to expect at your dress appointment. You don’t want to miss it. In the meantime, tell us about your dress-shopping day? We’d love to hear your stories!

What is The Bride List?

For those of you who have been following us for at least the past couple of weeks, you've probably seen a couple of shoutouts and announcements regarding something new we have called The Bride List.

And while we have been working hard to get it up and running over the past couples of weeks, we haven't really told you all what it is and how it will help you! And so, today we're talking everything you need to know about The Bride List: for vendors AND for brides!

For Brides

The Bride List is just as it sounds, a list of vendors that we highly recommend for our brides-to-be!

And what makes this list so unique and helpful?

1. We have highly researched and background checked each of these companies so you don't have to!

We have checked their reviews, social media, websites, pricing, packages and spoken with each of them personally to ensure we are steering you in the right direction! And so, if you find a vendor on our list, you can be sure they will do an amazing job with your wedding! Or else we would not recommend them :) And yes, we have denied companies due to negative reviews, un-professionalism, etc...we aren't just saying that!

2. We allow vendors to list with us from all over the place!

The reason each vendor does not have a location listed, is because a majority of these vendors are willing to travel to you! So if you love a vendor, don't discriminate based on location. Contact them as see what they can offer...even if you live across the country! And don't forget to tell them that The Overwhelmed Bride sent you :)

3. Social Media

All of the vendors we list use social media and that is a great form of inspiration for all of you! Whether you are searching for the perfect bridal bouquet design, are looking for the perfect lighting and dance floor monogram for your reception, or just want to look at some amazing wedding photos, you can be sure to find some fabulous inspiration and a lot more pretty pictures on their social media pages!

4. How are we different?

Yes I know, you can find every vendor and their mother on The Knot and Wedding Wire. And those are great places to begin your search, but we know that this many vendors all listed on 10+ pages can be extremely overwhelming for many brides! So if you are looking for a more exclusive list, this is the place to go!

We will also be frequently showcasing The Bride List members across our own social media as well, so if you like what you see, follow them and you may even find your future photographer, florist, or DJ :)

Because we highly background check each vendor before adding them to The Bride List, we will be continually adding vendors as they are accepted! So remember to keep checking back for more!

For Wedding Professionals and Shop Owners

If you are a photographer, an Etsy shop owner, a limousine service, a florist, a sound engineer or any wedding professional that would benefit our bride followers as they plan their weddings (even if your vendor category is not already included on our current list), please fill out an application at the link below and we will be in touch!

Featured Wedding // Holly-Ann + James' Cathedral Wedding

Holly and James' August 30, 2014 wedding at Worcester Cathedral echoed elements seen at Kate and Williams 2011 wedding, of which Holly adored. The brief to Wedding Planner Jane Riddell from Planned for Perfection was "Timeless Elegance."

Holly and her bridesmaids stayed at the Lygon Arms Hotel the night before the wedding, a traditional coaching inn located in the picture perfect Cotswold village of village of Broadway. Both the wedding dress and the bridesmaid dressses were designed and made by Susan Gadsby from Greensleeve Bridal. With Holly's dress inspired by her love of several beautiful gowns, she included a high neckline and pin-tucked shoulders, exposed lace bodice, sheer lace sleeves, a bustle and a hand embroided train that was over 2 1/2 metres long!
She accented the stunning lace gown with a bespoke handmade veil and an Edwardian platinum and diamond tiara.

Arriving at the ceremony in a vintage car to the ringing of the Cathedral bells and surrounded by well wishers, Holly definitely looked the part of a regal bride. James and Holly included the celebration of the Eucharist into the service, so nannys were booked for those who wanted their children looked after.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds were greeted by the Silk Street Jazz band who walked guests from the Cathedral across to the Bishops palace for a Champagne and canape reception with entertainment provided for the children by medievil knights and princesses. It was so important to James and Holly that the children also had a wonderful day, leaving lasting memories for their two daughters.

The wedding breakfast took place in College Hall at Kings School, a short walk from the Cathedral. Decorated in timeless white and green, tall impressive arrangements added grandeur to the hall, which were lined with lime trees, bringing the outside in to create a beautiful, rather majestic atmosphere. Holly and James had two wedding cakes, both made by family members - a traditional fruit cake and an indulgent chocolate cake.

Each table was named after a tree, specifically chosen to convey a loving message and every guest had lavender short bread favours, made by the Lavender picked from the family home. After the wedding breakfast, singer Paul Pashley entertained guests with his velvet voice and engaging showmanship before a friend of James' DJ'd for the party element of the evening.

Congratulations Holly and James! We wish you a lifetime of love and happiness together!
